OPEN EINDE

This studio assignment was within the framework of ‘Open Einde’. An interesting topic dedicated to the death and it’s reflections. We had to design a Pavilion where people could meditate, reflect about life or work on a loss. We only had the nine planes from the golden section to work with. Besides that, we were allowed to choose our own location and materialisation. I have chosen the mole in Nieuwpoort, at the Belgian Coast. This is where my roots are located. For me, nothing can be more restful than a walk along the coastline. But ending your walk in a peaceful pavilion where you can be alone with your thoughts is even more beautiful. At the end of the mole was for me the perfect location. It’s like your in the middle of the sea, surrounded by nature and away from the crowds. The only thing you hear are the waves beating against the rocks. This is the ideal place to relax and reflect. My Pavilion consists of white wooden shelves that refer to the beach cabins by the sea. I decided to work with a simple circulation so you're not constantly disturbed by other people. Centrally, I created a wall where people can wright down their thoughts. When it’s high tide, the waves go through the pavilion and wash all the texts away. The concept is to leave the past behind and move on with a fresh start. Sooner or later everyone has bad moments in his/her life. I wanted to create a honest place where people can leave those negativity behind and see a bright future in front of them. Inside the pavilion is a small focus on the Lighthouse between Nieuwpoort and Oostende. When you go really early in the morning, you’ll have an amazing light strip by the rising sun.
