DE GALERIJ
For this studio project, we had to renovate an old chemistry factory into an art gallery and residence for an artist. The site was fully surrounded by buildings and only had e few windows. Because of that, the sunlight was very limited. The building had e flat roof, which means a lot of possibilities to enter the sunlight. The building was perfectly located so that sunlight from the North could enter the gallery through the roof . An effective way for even light are sheds. In former times there were sheds. But they broke this roof off and turned it into a next level. I decided to work again with these sheds. Because of this manner I was able to bring even lighting in the building and get the former design back from in the past. The concept in this project was to bring back the authenticity of the building. In de first floor, under the sheds, I decided to put glass bricks in the floor plate. This is a typical material situated in the same time as the sheds. These glass bricks could bring the light form the sheds all the way down to the ground floor. Besides that, I wanted to involve the other two buildings in this story. I have chosen to make a cove in each building. Those 2 are flipped around and mirror each other. That way I can also enter the light trough minor surgery. The doors to enter the artist’s residence and the gallery itself have the full length of the façade. The style of the artist’s residence and the furniture are industrial vintage.
